Silver Springs

Stevie Nicks wrote “Silver Springs” in 1976 after her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac’s guitarist. It was supposed to be on Rumours, but the track got cut and tucked away on the side of “Go Your Own Way” which just so happened to be Lindsey’s breakup song about her. Her side of the story was silenced while his played on the radio.

Fast forward to 1997. This time, Stevie finally is able to get her spotlight. However, rumors of Stevie and Lindsey reconnecting during rehearsals linger. Supposedly, Lindsey was even considering leaving his longterm girlfriend at this time to give it another try with Stevie. After everything, after decades of distance, the timing almost lined up again. But then, his girlfriend told him she was pregnant. Lindsey broke things off with Stevie for good this time.

Watching it back, the context makes it impossible not to feel the weight in Stevie’s voice. At first, the performance starts like any other, but then she stares at Lindsey as she sings, “You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you.” No one can deny how hypnotizing this is.
